We sat down with Dylan Houseworth, the Official Photographer at Greensboro Swarm and the PBC. Dylan's creativity captured the essence of the PBC and made everyone look good. From working with the Greensboro Swarm to starting DHouse Photography, Dylan is a rising star in sports photography and we were fortunate to sit down with him and dig in.
See what he had to say.
Q: Can you tell us about your experience with the PBC?
A: PBC was one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had through my career so far. The staff was all so welcoming and friendly, Jake had the whole event professionally organized, and the talent was incredible to watch!
Q: Can you describe what an opportunity like the PBC represents to not only players, but also to NBA personnel and agents?
A: Sleepers and youth are two of the most important factors in the sports world. For the players, they have a chance to prove that they might have been over looked and get a chance at something bigger and better. Personnel and agents are always looking for the “diamond in the rough” of these drafts, and the PBC is full of them. The young talent available now is unbelievable. As for a 22-year-old aspiring student of the game like me, it is an opportunity that I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. I also have so much to prove and I am grateful to have a platform to show it on.
Q: What made you want to work for the PBC?
A: Opportunity above all. Basketball has been a long-standing love for me and I take every opportunity I can to meet new people in the industry and see how the business works. Sports are so vast beyond just the play on the court and it all fascinates me.
Q: What is one of your favorite memories of working with the PBC?
A: Easily meeting Lavar Ball. He was so kind and genuine with the whole staff and even took pictures with us. That is something I will never forget.
Q: You are currently the Official Photographer at Greensboro Swarm. What are some of your day-to-day responsibilities?
A: I take photos for the team that includes game nights, community/charity events, player/season ticket holder events, etc. I also assist with the team’s social media postings and operation. My area is marketing, PR, and sales for the most part.
Q: As a photographer, what is your favorite moment to capture when taking pictures of a basketball game?
A: I always thrive to get the images that people don’t get. Everyone gets the big dunk or shot but they all look the same. I try to take mine from different perspectives to give a fresh image that people haven’t seen before. But the dunks are easily the most fun.
Q: Out of all the pictures you have taken in basketball, what is your favorite one and why?
A: I have a picture of a past Greensboro Swarm player, Damien Wilkins, who played in the NBA and now works in the league office. He used to run through a pregame ritual every game where he would inspect the ball and then hug it. On one of his last games in the league, I set up where I knew he would perform this ritual and captured him hugging the ball, showing his love for the game. Damien even had it as his Instagram profile picture for the rest of the season!
Q: If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be?
A: Kobe Bryant because he is the greatest sports-business mind, Ben Roethlisberger because he has been my favorite athlete since I was 7, and Jake Kelfer because I could pick his mind all day long!
Q: How do you define success?
A: Success is being remembered. It’s not always about money or title or power. If you are remembered as someone who was influential or who made a difference in peoples’ lives, only then are you successful in your endeavors. You only live as long as you are talked about.
